GENERAL INFORMATION This table contains figures on the number of listed monuments and historic buildings in the Netherlands on 31 December of the year in question for the years 1965-2023. Provincial and municipal monuments are not included in this table. All figures in this table are based on the Dutch National Register of Monuments and Historic Buildings which is compiled by the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands. The regional classification is based on the municipal classification of January 1, 2024 for all years. The figures are not only broken down by type of monument, but also by part of the country, province and municipality. Data available from 1965 to 2023 according to the municipal classification of 2024 Tables containing the listed monuments using the regional classifications from the years 2016 and onward can be found in the data archive, see the link in paragraph 3. Status of the figures: The figures in this table are final. Changes as of 25 April 2025: None, the table has been discontinued. When will new figures be published? The figures from 1965 to 2024 according to the municipal classification of 2025 will be available in the second quarter of 2025 in a new table, see the link in paragraph 3. 2. The figures are based on the Dutch National Register of Monuments and Historic Buildings as published by the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands. The data have not been edited by CBS. The categorisation of the listed monuments and historic buildings is based on the categorisation into main categories (hoofdcategorieën) the Heritage Monitor database (Dutch only): Erfgoed databank. 5. Archaeology
Archaeological national monuments are areas of very high archaeological value. Characteristic of archaeological monuments in the Netherlands is that most lie below the surface. Only a small part are eye-catching monuments such as megalithic tombs and burial mounds

Administr., court, government buildings
This category contains objects such as courts, government buildings, administrative buildings and parts thereof that have been classified as a National Monument, for example town houses, courts, postal and tax offices.

Farms, mills and businesses
This category includes farms, different types of mills and pumping stations and industrial monuments. Examples of the latter include sugar refineries, breweries, cigar factories, bakeries and forges.

Culture, health and science
This category includes theatres, concert halls and museums, but also hospitals, orphanages, courtyards with almshouses, school and university buildings.

Commercial, storage, transport buildings
This category includes offices, commercial (wholesale/distribution) buildings, warehouses and carriage or coach houses, train stations and shops.

Castles, country houses and parks
This category includes castles, palaces, country houses and their parts and/or outbuildings, as well as parks and gardens.

Religious buildings
This category mainly contains churches and chapels. Also monasteries, abbeys and other buildings or parts thereof which have to do with faith such as synagogues and mosques are covered by this category.

Sport, recreat., associat., hospitality
This category includes hotels, restaurants and cafes, swimming pools, equestrian centres, stadiums and their parts, as well as animal accommodation, meeting rooms, association buildings and sororities.

Funeral homes and cemeteries
This category contains morgues, crematoria and cemeteries and their parts such as bell chairs and gate buildings.

Defenses and military buildings
This category contains (parts of) structures such as ramps, bastions or bulwarks, moats, city walls and ramparts, city gates, barracks, forts, bunkers and other works in defense of the city or country.

Objects in squares and the like
This category includes (amongst others) monuments and statues, boundary stones/markers, pumps, lampposts and benches.

Road and hydraulic works
This category includes bridges, viaducts or flyovers, tunnels, river/canal locks, flood defences, ship or dockyards and ports, as well as parts of (rail) roads.

Housing and housing complexes
The category with the most objects is that of the houses and housing complexes. Just over half of all national monuments fall within this category. Most of the monuments in this category consist of (parts of) houses, but also (parts of) service homes, residential buildings and residential shop buildings.
